Preparing for Water Fasting: What You Eat Beforehand Matters Too

The Last Supper
This week, a new group arrived at Back to the Garden, our water fasting center in the mountains of Puerto Rico, to begin their water fast. And when the doctor asked them how they had prepared, most of them smiled with a little bit of guilt.
Eggs. Pastries. Fried foods. Coffee. Bread. Pizza. Soda. All of it “because I won’t be able to have it afterward.”
I understand. I’ve seen it hundreds of times over more than fifteen years of supporting people through fasting. But today, I want to tell you why that last supper comes at a cost to your body and how preparing differently can give you a completely different experience.
What Happens Inside
When you enter a water fast straight from junk food, your body does not start healing on the first day. It starts cleaning up the mess from the previous week.
Sugar and refined flours have your insulin rising and falling. When you cut them out abruptly, headaches, irritability, and cravings that seem to have a voice of their own can show up. If you were also having three cups of coffee a day, caffeine withdrawal gets added to the mix.
Your liver, which should be focused on deep cleansing, first has to process fried oils, additives, and alcohol. And your intestines, filled with waste that peristalsis did not manage to move, become heavy and sluggish.
The result: the first two or three days feel like a fight. Many patients tell me, "Doctor, I don't know if I can do this." And it is not the fast. It is the transition they did not make at home.
Preparing for Water Fasting: How to Arrive Ready
Preparation is not a sacrifice. It is the gateway.
Two or three days beforehand, fill your plate with life: fruits, salads, steamed vegetables, simple soups, grains, and beans. Let your digestion gradually slow down, just as you dim the lights before going to sleep.
Gradually cut back on coffee instead of stopping from one day to the next. Say goodbye to sugar, refined flours, fried foods or foods sautéed in oils, animal products, and alcohol. Drink water intentionally, and if you can, add a green juice in the morning.
And prepare yourself on the inside, too. Ask yourself why you are fasting. That answer is what sustains you on day three, when the body asks and the mind negotiates.
When a patient arrives this way, I notice it immediately. They enter the fast with more energy, fewer symptoms, and greater clarity. Their body does not spend the first few days cleaning up the mess. It starts healing right away.
I’ll Be With You from Day One
At our fasting center, we guide you through the preparation for water fasting before you arrive, so your body can begin healing from the very first day. You can start with a free consultation.
And if you are not ready for a water fast yet or prefer to start from home, with Revive 8, our juice and medicinal tea detox from November 1 to 8, the first two days are dedicated to guided preparation. You do not arrive at the fast alone. You arrive ready.
It is eight days from home, with daily live sessions on nutrition, movement, breathing, meditation, and cooking, plus a community that walks alongside you. The special price is available until October 20.
